The Big 3 This Week: Your Unmissable Guide
This week is massive, but if you can only do three things, make them these. Each one offers a completely different taste of what makes the Garden Route so unique.
1. The Festival Escape: Earthdance Gardenroute

Why it’s a must-do: This is more than just a music festival; it’s a full-blown, three-day escape into the heart of the Karoo. Earthdance is a global movement, and our local edition is a beautiful gathering of good people, good intentions, and seriously groovy basslines. It’s your chance to disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with music, nature, and community, all while dancing under a blanket of stars. The entire event is also a force for good, with this year’s proceeds going to support the Rosemore Home for the Aged. Come for the music, stay for the vibe, and leave with a full heart.

2. The Epic Challenge: Lions Karoo to Coast MTB Race

Why it’s a must-do: For the riders, this is the bucket-list 100 km mountain bike race—a legendary test of grit and endurance that traverses one of the most breathtaking routes in the country, from the arid beauty of Uniondale, over the Outeniqua Mountains, and down into the lush forests of Knysna. For the rest of us, it’s a spectator’s dream. The energy in Uniondale over the weekend is electric. Arrive early on Friday for the Wine and Wheels Expo, soak up the pre-race buzz, and then cheer on the thousands of cyclists as they embark on their epic journey on Sunday morning. It’s a true celebration of human spirit and our incredible landscape.

Why it’s a must-do: Dust off your dirndls and lederhosen, because Fancourt is hosting an Oktoberfest with a distinctly sophisticated South African flair. This isn’t just about beer (though there will be plenty of incredible local craft brews to sample); it’s a full-day celebration of food, music, and good old-fashioned fun on one of the most beautiful estates in the country. Expect long festive tables, live music and a DJ all day, delicious German-inspired cuisine (think eisbein, schnitzel, and wursts), and a fantastic, high-energy atmosphere. The Weekend Plan: A Knysna Music Marathon
If you find yourself in or around Knysna this weekend, you’re in for a treat. The town is turning into a veritable live music hub. Here’s how to make the most of it.
Friday Night: Country Classics & Lagoon Views
Kick off the weekend with a dose of pure country magic. The Tribute to Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers is set to be a night of timeless hits that will have you singing along from start to finish. Held at the ever-popular Blend, it’s the perfect relaxed setting to ease into the weekend. Young and sassy Ane’ channels Dolly’s iconic spirit, while award-winning Gareth James embodies the legendary Gambler himself.
- Event: A Tribute to Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers
- Location: Blend Country Restaurant & Pub, George Rex Drive, Knysna
- Date & Time: Friday, 19 September. Gates open at 5:30 PM, show starts at 7:00 PM.
- Price: R160 for adults, R100 for kids & teens (5-17).
Saturday Day: New Discoveries & Local Flavours
Before the evening’s music, it’s time to explore what’s new in town. The highly anticipated Milkwood Squarehas finally opened its doors on Main Street, and it’s a fantastic addition to Knysna’s retail heart. This R150 million development has been designed with a “village feel,” thoughtfully built around a magnificent old Milkwood tree that has been preserved as a natural centrepiece.
It’s not a massive, impersonal mall, but a convenient, community-focused strip of high-quality stores. You’ll find a top-spec Checkers FreshX and Checkers Liquor, a Clicks, Checkers Outdoor, Whitehouse, The Crazy Store, and a few great fast-food options and a high-end coffee shop. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit and private investment in Knysna, creating a vibrant new hub for locals and visitors. Spend your Saturday afternoon here grabbing lunch, stocking up on supplies, and enjoying the buzz.
Saturday Night: Choose Your Anthem
Saturday night in Knysna presents a delicious dilemma with two incredible tribute shows happening simultaneously. Which will you choose?
Option 1: The Grunge Revival
If you’re ready to relive the raw energy of the 90s, head back to Blend for A Tribute to Nirvana. Performed by the incredible Cantrel, this is your chance to grunge-out to all your favourite hits. Expect a high-energy, no-frills night of pure rock nostalgia.
- Event: A Tribute to Nirvana
- Location: Blend Country Restaurant & Pub, Knysna
- Date & Time: Saturday, 20 September (Check with venue for exact time).
Option 2: The Classic Rock Soiree
For a more polished, but no less powerful, musical experience, make your way up to the elegant Simola Hotel for Rumours of Fleetwood Mac. After years of sold-out shows across the Cape, this acclaimed tribute is finally coming to the Garden Route. The show is centred around the iconic Rumours album and is performed by some of Cape Town’s top musicians.
- Event: Rumours of Fleetwood Mac
- Location: Simola Hotel Country Club & Spa, Knysna
- Date & Time: Saturday, 20 September, from 6:00 PM.
- Price: R390 (Ticket is for the show; a full à la carte dinner menu is available).
- Booking: Heads up—this show is officially SOLD OUT! Your best bet is to call the hotel directly at 044 302 9600 to see if they have a waiting list for any last-minute cancellations.
Sunday Recovery: Forest Trails & Lakeside Coffee
After a packed weekend, a gentle Sunday recovery is in order. My recommendation? Head into the Knysna Forest for a peaceful walk. The Jubilee Creek picnic site offers a beautiful, easy trail along the river. Or, for something a bit more immersive, try one of the three circular Elephant Trails that start from the Diepwalle Forest Station. Afterwards, treat yourself to a well-deserved coffee and pastry at one of the fantastic waterside cafés on Thesen Island.
The Local Secret: A Taste of Tranquility
Every now and then, you stumble upon a place that feels like it was put there just for you. This week’s secret is exactly that: the Blue Rocks Cafe and Grill in Nature’s Valley. Tucked away in one of the Garden Route’s most pristine and peaceful corners, this sensational beach-side spot is the ultimate reward after a swim in the lagoon or a hike on the nearby Salt River trail.
It’s open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a menu focused on fresh, seasonal fare with a Mediterranean seafood twist. Locals whisper in hushed tones about their prawn curry, and for good reason—it’s to-die-for. This is the real deal, a true hidden gem where you can sit back with sandy feet, listen to the ocean, and enjoy a meal that tastes like the Garden Route itself.
Adventure Idea: Paddle to a Hidden Waterfall
If you’re craving a bit of adventure that’s both active and utterly serene, you have to try the canoe trip up the Touw River in Wilderness. It’s a classic Garden Route experience that never gets old.
Here’s how to do it:
- Get Your Gear: Head to Eden Adventures, conveniently located at the Fairy Knowe Hotel right on the river. You can hire single or double canoes for a few hours or the whole day.
- The Paddle: The journey to the waterfall is a gentle 40-minute (about 3 km) paddle up the tranquil, reed-lined river. The water is dark and calm, and the only sounds are your paddle and the birds in the surrounding forest.
- The Hike: You’ll moor your canoe at a small landing and continue on foot. A beautiful 2.5 km boardwalk guides you through the indigenous forest for another 40 minutes.
- The Reward: The trail ends at a beautiful waterfall cascading into a series of large rock pools. It’s the perfect spot for a refreshing (and chilly!) swim and a well-deserved picnic.
Pro-Tip: Pack some snacks, plenty of water, and your binoculars. The forest is rich with birdlife, and you might just be lucky enough to spot the elusive and vibrant Knysna Loerie.
Community Corner: News You Can Use
A few important updates and opportunities for our community this week.
A Call to the Coast: International Coastal Cleanup Day
This Saturday, 20 September, is International Coastal Cleanup Day, the world’s largest single-day volunteer effort for our oceans. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to give back to the beautiful coastline we all love so much. All across the Garden Route, community groups will be gathering to clean our beaches, rivers, and estuaries, collecting crucial data on pollution as they go. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you are welcome to join. To find a registered cleanup near you or to organize your own, visit the Sustainable Seas Trust website at sst.org.za. Let’s work together to keep our paradise pristine.
An Important Update from Knysna
You may have seen in the news that the Western Cape Government has made the decision to dissolve the Knysna Municipal Council and appoint an administrator. This step was taken in response to ongoing challenges with governance and basic service delivery, particularly concerning the town’s water and sewage infrastructure. While this is significant news for residents, it’s also a moment to recognize the incredible resilience of the Knysna community. The town’s heart beats strong through its local businesses, artists, and community organizations. Knysna remains as beautiful and welcoming as ever, so please continue to visit, shop, dine, and support the people who make it such a special place.
Water Watch: Garden Route Dam Levels
Just a quick update for all residents: as of 9 September, the Garden Route Dam was at 71.90% capacity. A friendly reminder that Level 2B water restrictions are still in effect across the George municipal area. Let’s continue to be mindful of our water usage.
