Halloween Riffs, Hidden Pools, and a Taste of the Med

Your Garden Route Guide | 30 October 2025

Hey Garden Routers,

It’s the last weekend of October, and you can feel the shift in the air. The fynbos is in full bloom, the days are stretching out, and there’s a certain energy building from Mossel Bay to the mountains of Tsitsikamma. This isn’t just any weekend; it’s the pivot point. It’s Halloween, sure, but it’s also the last deep breath before the full, glorious chaos of the summer season kicks in. This week is about choosing your vibe—whether that’s pushing your limits in a world-class race, finding a secret swimming spot, or just catching some killer live music. Let’s get into it.

The Big 5 This Week

Here are the five things you absolutely shouldn’t miss. They’re a perfect snapshot of the coast right now: a little bit wild, a little bit refined, and all completely unforgettable.

The Ultimate Test of Grit: Knysna Extreme Triathlon

This is not your average triathlon. Billed as one of the toughest on the continent, the Knysna Extreme is a spectacle of human endurance set against one of the most brutal and beautiful backdrops imaginable. For athletes, it’s a bucket-list challenge. For the rest of us, it’s a front-row seat to an incredible show of determination. Watching the competitors battle the lagoon swim, conquer the mountain passes on the bike, and tackle the trail run is a powerful reminder of what the human body—and the Garden Route landscape—is capable of. Find a spot along the route and cheer them on.

This is a rare collaboration that promises to be less of a gig and more of a musical masterclass. The intimate setting is the perfect place to witness these two virtuosos create something truly unique. It’s the connoisseur’s choice for the night.

It’s a chance for locals to get expert advice on creating beautiful, water-wise gardens and for visitors to gain a deeper appreciation for the unique fynbos and flora they see on their hikes. Expect informative talks, a huge selection of indigenous plants, and a fantastic, family-friendly atmosphere.

New in Town: A Mediterranean Welcome in Plett

Plettenberg Bay’s dining scene has just been infused with a dose of coastal cool. Sotto, newly opened in the Beacon Isle Convenience Centre, is a beautifully designed restaurant, deli, and lounge bringing Mediterranean flavours with a touch of Middle Eastern flair to the bay. The vibe is warm and cosmopolitan, equally suited for a long, lazy lunch sharing mezze platters or sipping a signature cocktail as the sun goes down.

What makes Sotto particularly smart is its understanding of the Plett lifestyle. The deli and takeaway counter is a game-changer for those on the move, offering everything from excellent coffee and superfood smoothies to wholesome harvest-style lunches perfect for a beach picnic. It’s a flexible, health-conscious approach that feels perfectly in tune with the active, outdoor culture of the Garden Route. Mark your calendar for their “First Thursdays” event, a monthly gathering with live music, cocktail specials, and great vibes.

The Local Secret: Knysna’s Drupkelders Trail

For those who believe the best views are earned, not given, let us introduce you to Drupkelders. Tucked away in the Goudveld section of the forest, this isn’t a casual stroll; it’s a short but challenging 3.6 km hike that rewards your effort tenfold. The trail descends into the Homtini River gorge, leading to a series of magnificent, deep rock pools surrounded by lush, verdant forest. It’s a pristine, almost prehistoric-feeling paradise perfect for a summer day of swimming and picnicking.

The reason it remains so pristine is by design. Access is strictly limited to just 12 people per day, and no children under 12 are permitted, which preserves the trail’s wild, untouched character. This careful management is a perfect example of the conservation ethos that protects the Garden Route’s most precious spots. You need to book a permit in advance, but making the effort means you get to experience one of the most magical and secluded places in the Knysna forest.

  • Location: Trail starts at the Forest Edge Nature-lovers Retreat gate entrance, Rheenendal.

Weekend Weather

It looks like a weekend of two halves, so plan accordingly. Friday is shaping up to be the pick of the bunch, with scattered clouds and warm temperatures hitting the low-to-mid 20s—perfect for getting outdoors. Saturday brings a change, with cooler air and a good chance of showers across the region, so maybe save that indoor concert or restaurant visit for then. Sunday should see the rain clearing up, with temperatures hovering around a pleasant 19-20°C, making it ideal for a lazy Sunday market stroll or a relaxed lunch.

Whatever you choose, have a fantastic weekend.

All the best,
