The Big 3 This Week: Don’t Miss Out

With so much happening, we’ve curated the three essential experiences that define the upcoming weekend. Whether you’re a music lover, a nature enthusiast, or a culture seeker, there’s a world-class event waiting for you.

1. For the Music Lovers: Country In The Karoo Music Festival

This is more than just a concert; it’s a full-blown Karoo immersion. Jakhals Events and Bhejane Game Reserve have teamed up to create an unforgettable weekend at the Bhejane Game Lodge just outside Willowmore. The festival kicks off on Friday night with an intimate food and wine pairing, setting the stage for the main event on Saturday: a live concert featuring Afrikaans country superstar Appel as the headline act. The weekend wraps up with a relaxed taco breakfast on Sunday morning. It’s a rare opportunity to experience top-tier live music against the vast, breathtaking backdrop of the Klein Karoo—a perfect weekend escape.

2. For the Nature Enthusiasts: Plett Bitou Birding Festival

From Friday, 24 October, until the end of the month, Plettenberg Bay transforms into a paradise for bird lovers with the return of the Plett Bitou Birding Festival. This week-long celebration of the region’s incredible avian biodiversity is designed for everyone from seasoned twitchers to curious beginners. The program is packed with diverse experiences, including early morning guided walks through fynbos and forest, peaceful canoe outings on the Keurbooms River, and fascinating bird-ringing demonstrations led by local experts. More than just a species checklist, the festival is rooted in conservation and community, focusing on the joy of “mindful observation, connection, and well-being”.

3. For the Culture Seekers: ForestJazz Weekend

Prepare for an enchanting weekend of soulful rhythms in Knysna. The ForestJazz festival offers a sophisticated and atmospheric experience, hosted at the unique 34 Waenhout venue, a converted old wood factory. The event begins on Friday evening with an exclusive VIP JAZZ CLUB night in an intimate indoor setting. On Saturday, the festival opens up from 2:00 PM into the night, featuring six to seven different jazz acts performing under beautiful stretch tents. Complemented by artisanal build-your-own burgers, wood-fired pizzas, and a full bar, this event is a true celebration of the creative, soulful side of the Garden Route.

The Local Secret: A Taste of Thyme & Again

While new spots are always exciting, some of the Garden Route’s greatest treasures are the institutions that have perfected their craft over the years. Just outside Plettenberg Bay on the N2, you’ll find a prime example: Thyme & Again Farmstall. It’s a place that’s all too easy to drive straight past if you don’t know it’s there, but for those in the know, it’s an essential stop.

Step inside, and you’re greeted by the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pies, artisanal breads, and brewing coffee. The shelves are a treasure trove of local goodness, laden with everything from homemade preserves and regional cheeses to delectable baked goods and unique gifts. It’s the perfect place to stock up on supplies for a picnic at Robberg Nature Reserve or to find a special something to take back home. Thyme & Again is more than just a farm stall; it’s a celebration of the Garden Route’s rich agricultural heritage and warm hospitality, a true hidden gem that captures the flavour of our region.

Community Corner: What’s the Word on the Route?

Stay connected with the news and developments shaping our community. Here are two key updates from across the region this week.

Full Steam Ahead! The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe is Coming Back!

In what is undoubtedly some of the most exciting news for the region in years, it has been officially confirmed that the iconic Outeniqua Choo Tjoe steam train is on track for a grand return. After nearly two decades of silence, Classic Rail has announced that contracts have been signed and plans are firmly in place to rebuild the historic line. The project will be rolled out in two phases, with the first priority being the restoration of the track between Knysna and Sedgefield, a process expected to take about 12 months. Work has already begun, with teams clearing vegetation to allow for detailed inspections of bridges and tracks. This monumental undertaking is set to be a major boost for the Garden Route, promising a wave of renewed tourism and creating much-needed jobs and opportunities for local businesses.

A Note on Our Dams: Every Drop Counts

As we enjoy the beauty of spring, it’s important to remain mindful of our most vital resource: water. Recent municipal reports indicate that the Garden Route is currently experiencing a moderate level of drought, with below-average rainfall recorded this year. In George, Level 2B water restrictions remain in place, with the Garden Route Dam level reported at 61.88% as of 14 October. Elsewhere, the Garden Route District Municipality has been actively assisting communities in Knysna (Hornlee, Concordia) and Bitou (Kurland, Buffalo Bay) by tankering in water to supplement low reservoir levels, a situation exacerbated by recent power outages. This is a gentle reminder for all of us—residents and visitors alike—to use water wisely. Our collective conservation efforts are crucial to ensuring a sustainable supply for everyone.
