The Jazz Wave, Green Coasts & A Sunday Cure

Your guide to The Garden Route – 20 November

Summer is flirting with us, isn’t it? One day it’s beach weather, the next you’re grabbing a jumper. While the region is looking a bit thirsty and we’re all hoping for some proper rain, the clear skies mean your outdoor plans are safe for now. The holiday crowds haven’t quite descended yet, and the calendar is officially waking up. Whether you’re chasing jazz in Mossel Bay or looking for a new dinner spot in Plett, this week is about getting out before the silly season truly hits.

    The Big 5 This Week

Five standout events you can’t miss.

    MosJazz Festival

This isn’t just a concert; it’s a full weekend of camping, sun, and serious saxophone vibes right on the beach—easily the biggest musical vibe of the month.

    📍 De Bakke Santos Resort, Mossel Bay | ⏰ 27 Nov – 1 Dec | 💰 From R300

    Jimmy Nevis: Chronic Heartbreak Tour

One of SA’s smoothest pop acts hits our favorite wine-farm-venue; expect high energy and those radio hits you definitely know the words to.

    📍 ReedValley, Mossel Bay | ⏰ Fri 21 Nov, 18:00 | 💰 Check Link

    Shaza Live at Blend

Sunday blues are impossible here; grab a wood-fired pizza, settle in under the trees, and enjoy one of the Garden Route’s most beloved local voices for a laid-back afternoon session.

    📍 Blend Country Restaurant, Knysna | ⏰ Sun 23 Nov, 12:00 | 💰 Free Entry (Book a table)

    The Enchanted Botanical Feast

A proper date-night option: a long-table dinner under the stars with live ballet, instrumental music, and local wines.

    📍 Garden Route Botanical Garden, George | ⏰ Fri 28 Nov, 18:00 | 💰 R580

    Carpe Diem Christmas Market

Kickstart your holiday shopping early at this beloved local fundraiser; it’s less “kitschy baubles” and more “quality handcrafted goods.”

    📍 Carpe Diem School, George | ⏰ 21-23 Nov | 💰 Free Entry

    The Day Trip

If you need to escape the house for a few hours…

The Mission: Rediscover Swartvlei’s “Green Coast” You might drive past Sedgefield every week, but when last did you actually walk the beach? Swartvlei Beach has just been awarded Green Coast Status for the second year running—a prestigious nod to its biodiversity and beauty.

    • Swartvlei Beach 📍 Sedgefield
    • Why it’s worth the drive: Unlike the Blue Flag beaches which are about amenities, Green Coast is about wild, unspoiled nature. The walk to Gericke’s Point from here is iconic for exploring rock pools (keep an eye out for the rare African Black Oystercatcher).
    • Pitstop Strategy:
      • Coffee: Grab a flat white and a “bomb” (pastry) at Steam Whistle Stop (the old station) on your way in.
      • Lunch: PiliPili Beach Bar for a pizza and a cold beer with your toes in the sand—it’s practically a local institution.

    The Adventure Log

For when you need a little adrenaline.

    Africanyon Canyoning Trip

The Lowdown: This is the real deal in The Crags—abseiling waterfalls, zip-lining into rock pools, and swimming through river gorges. Why go: It’s one of the few places where you can feel like you’re deep in the jungle just 20 minutes from Plett; the “Standard Trip” is thrilling but manageable for beginners.

    New in Town

    Fresh spots on our radar.

    Sotto

Located just below the Surf Café in Plett, this new Mediterranean-Middle Eastern hybrid is making waves. Think mezze platters, fresh flatbreads, and a killer cocktail list. It’s a restaurant-deli concept perfect for a lingering lunch that turns into dinner.

    The Local Favourite

    Gwaiing Beach Picnic Spot

Most people stick to Vic Bay or Herold’s Bay, but Gwaiing (near George) is the local go-to for a braai. It’s rugged, small, and feels completely hidden. The river mouth is safe for a dip if the tide is right, but the real draw is the braai facilities overlooking the ocean. Go early to snag a spot.

    Local Intel

    • Blue Flag Bonanza: 19 beaches across the Garden Route just snagged Blue Flag status for the 2025 season. Hessequa and Plett are leading the charge. It means our water quality is top-tier right now—swim with confidence.
    • Water Wise: Knysna Municipality has issued a fresh plea for water conservation this week. The reservoirs are okay, but let’s not push it—keep those showers short.

    Upcoming Events

Mark your calendars: The live entertainment lineup for December is heating up.

    • William Wolf Live (Mossel Bay) – 28 Nov
    • Roan Ash Live (Mossel Bay) – 5 Dec
    • Kevin Fraser: Heart of the World (Comedy) (Knysna) – 6 Dec
    • Alice in Wonderland Pantomime (George) – Starts 10 Dec
    • Sunset Sweatshop (Knysna) – 12 Dec
    • Jeremy Loops Live (Mossel Bay) – 15 Dec

    Weekend Weather

It’s looking like a classic mixed bag. Friday and Saturday should be warm and sunny, but expect the wind to pick up by Sunday afternoon with a chance of a late drizzle. Pack a windbreaker just in case.

  • An Island Festival, ABBA-Fueled Nights, and Plett’s Secret Gardens

An Island Festival, ABBA-Fueled Nights, and Plett’s Secret Gardens

Your Garden Route Guide | 6 November 2025

    Good morning, Garden Route.

Well, it’s here. That sudden feeling that the season has well and truly kicked off. As you’re reading this on Thursday, some of you are already planning your outfits for tonight’s “I Can Buy Myself Flowers” in Plett, and that’s exactly the vibe. The buzz is back.

This weekend feels like the real start, with a massive festival anchoring Knysna, a final bow in George, and music everywhere. It’s a classic Garden Route “double-booked” weekend, and we’re here to help you navigate it.

Whether you’re a local trying to figure out the new traffic, a visitor looking for the perfect Saturday, or just someone who needs to know what’s good, we’ve got you. Here’s your guide to the week ahead.

    The Big 5 This Week

Honestly, this Saturday (November 8) is so stacked with quality events, you’re going to have to make some tough choices. We’ve broken down the five most unmissable happenings across the Route to help you choose your own adventure.

The Main Event: The Leisure Isle Festival (Knysna)

This is the beating heart of the Garden Route this weekend. The 22nd annual Leisure Isle Festival is, for many, the official start to the summer. It’s a massive community gathering set under the trees in Kingsway Park, with all proceeds going to local Knysna charities. For visitors, this is the place to find high-quality, non-generic, locally-made art, crafts, and gourmet food. For locals, it’s a non-negotiable social catch-up. Get there early.

    • Where: Kingsway Park, Leisure Isle, Knysna
    • When: Saturday, 8 November & Sunday, 9 November 2025

The Friday Kick-Off: Songs of ABBA (Mossel Bay)

Here’s your perfect “Friday night, work is done” plan. The Diaz Hotel is hosting “Songs of ABBA,” a high-energy tribute show by Mike McCully and the Harmonix. It’s pure, unadulterated fun and guaranteed to have everyone on their feet. Grab your ‘Dancing Queen’ (and your tickets, before they sell out) and head to Mossel Bay for a night of pure nostalgia.

    • Where: Diaz Hotel & Resort, Mossel Bay
    • When: Friday, 7 November 2025, 20:00 – 22:00
    • Price: From R160

The Last Chance: Sweeney Todd (George)

This is not a drill. The George Arts Theatre’s brilliant production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” closes this weekend. If you’ve been meaning to go, this is your final warning. It’s a “killer chat about pies & revenge” and a true cultural high point. The final shows are Friday night, a Saturday matinee, and the final-final on Saturday night. Attend the tale.

    • Where: George Arts Theatre, 125 York Street, George
    • When: Final shows: Friday, 7 Nov (19:00) & Saturday, 8 Nov (Matinee at 15:00, Final Show at 19:00)
    • Price: R150 (Public) / R120 (Members)

The Insider’s Gig: The Betsies (Knysna)

Want to escape the festival crowds? This is the “cool” pick. While everyone else is on Leisure Isle, you could be discovering your new favourite band. The Betsies, a country duo featured on Apple TV’s “My Kind of Country”, are playing an intimate gig at the Knysna Gin distillery. This is a chance to see world-class talent—rooted in harmony and honest songwriting—in a brilliant, intimate setting.

    • Where: Knysna Gin, 5 Uil St, Knysna Industrial
    • When: Saturday, 8 November 2025, 19:30 (Gates open 18:00)
    • Price: R200

    5. The Good-Cause Garden Hop: Plett Open Garden Day (Plett)

For a more relaxed Saturday, this is a rare opportunity to peek behind the gates of Plett’s most beautiful private gardens. It’s the 12th annual Plett Open Garden Day, hosted by the Plett Animal Welfare Service (PAWS). You get to explore five unique gardens (including three in the exclusive Brackenridge Estate) for a great cause. Pro tip: The Ouland Royale Restaurant will host the PAWS plant and cake sale. Go for the gardens, stay for the scones.

    • Where: Five private gardens across Plett. Maps at Barney’s Info Kiosk. Plant/Cake Sale at Ouland Royale.
    • When: Saturday, 8 November 2025, 10:00 – 16:00
    • Price: R220 (cash preferred, available at gardens or Ouland)

New in Town: George’s New Foodie Hub

George locals will know that the area behind CTM and near the Eden Meander Lifestyle Centre is blowing up. The new Outeniqua Retail Village is now fully up and running, and it’s brought three excellent new restaurant options to the table. This is a big win for the area, which is seeing huge growth from new families “semigrating” to the node. Here’s our rundown of the new tenants.

    • Bossa: This is your new go-to for family-friendly, good-vibes-only dining. Bossa is known for its massive, crowd-pleasing menu where everyone (from kids to pensioners) finds something they want. Think burgers, pizzas, and great weekly specials. It’s the “we can’t agree on what to eat” solution.
    • Cowfish: Finally, a spot that solves the “I want sushi, he wants a burger” dilemma. Cowfish is built on exactly that, pairing high-end sushi and dim sum (like Salmon Carpaccio and Seared Beef Tataki) with gourmet burgers. It’s a bit more upmarket, perfect for a date night, and has a fantastic cocktail menu.
    • Polpetta: This is the one we’re really excited about. The original Joburg restaurant has a cult following. Polpetta is all about “no fuss, good quality, value for money Italian comfort food”. The reviews for the new George branch are already stellar, with people calling it a “culinary gem”. This is where you go when you need that perfect bowl of pasta.

The Local Secret #1: The Tsitsikamma Trail You Haven’t Done

Look, we love the famous Suspension Bridge trail in the Tsitsikamma National Park as much as anyone. But let’s be honest, it’s not exactly a secret, and it gets busy.

This week’s secret is for those who want that same indigenous forest magic without the crowds. It’s the Goesa Nature Walk.

It’s a stunning, 2km circular trail that’s completely free and starts right in Storms River Village—not in the main National Park. It’s an easy, one-hour walk that takes you down to a stream bordered by giant tree ferns, with beautiful sections of wooden boardwalk. It’s pure, quiet forest bliss and the perfect way to recharge.

Here’s the local tip: The trail starts at the SANParks office in Storms River Village. You’ll find it on Darnell Street, right around the corner from Storms River Adventures. You can even pick up a map there. You’re welcome.

The Local Secret #2: The Tsitsikamma Striptease Trail

You may have heard of the “hidden pools”, but this is the real insider tip for the Tsitsikamma area.

If you’re looking for a truly unique Garden Route experience, book a stay at the Tsitsikamma Lodge. Why? Because lodge guests get exclusive, free access to their private 5km “Striptease Trail”. Don’t let the cheeky name fool you (though it is named for the 11 crystal-clear rock pools along the path, like the ‘Bikini pool’ and ‘Fantasy pool’), this is one of the most serene and beautiful hikes on the coast.

It’s a 4-hour, private walk through an ancient indigenous forest, reserved just for guests, meaning you can have a pristine rock pool all to yourself. For locals, this is our top tip for your next staycation.

      Community Corner

This is the practical, need-to-know info for everyone.

      1. The Water Watch (A Serious Note)

This is the most important thing you’ll read today. We all need to be on high alert.

      • For our friends in Knysna: The municipality has declared Level 3 water restrictions. This is not a suggestion. It means municipal potable water is for human consumption only. You cannot water gardens (not even with a bucket) or wash cars/boats. Visitors, please be mindful of this in your guesthouses and rentals.
      • In George: We are on Level 2B restrictions as the Garden Route Dam is at 57.11%.
        Let’s all do our part.

      Upcoming Events: Your 30-Day Planner

The fun doesn’t stop this weekend. Here’s what to book and plan for in the month ahead.

The weekend of November 14-16 is as packed as this one. On Friday the 14th, the SPOILT Knysna Gift Fair kicks off at the Premier Resort, The Moorings. It’s a beautifully curated, boutique shopping event running Friday (9:00 – 18:00) and Saturday (9:00 – 16:00).

Then on Saturday, November 15, you’ll have to choose. Runners, the Knysna Waterfront Half Marathon (plus 10km and 5km) starts at 07:00 at the Waterfront. Online entries close November 10, so get on it. Register at https://www.entryninja.com/events/82421-waterfront-half-marathon. That same night in Mossel Bay, ReedValley is hosting ‘A Queen Experience’ with The Family Band ft. Mark Haze. That show starts at 20:00.

On Sunday, November 16, Mossel Bay becomes triathlon central for the Isuzu Ironman 70.3. The swim starts at Santos Beach, and the finish line is below the Cape St Blaize lighthouse. Spectators, this is a massive day, so plan for road closures and find a good spot along the run course.

The music continues in Mossel Bay on Friday, November 21, with Jimmy Nevis bringing his ‘Chronic Heartbreak Tour’ to ReedValley.

Looking further ahead, George gets a magical night on Friday, November 28, with the Enchanted Botanical Feast at the Garden Route Botanical Garden. This promises fine wine, live music, and dance performances in a beautiful setting.

And finally, the last weekend of November sees two massive festivals. The Mosjazz Music Festival takes over Mossel Bay from November 27 to December 1 for four days of seaside vibes. And, of course, Plett Rage kicks off on November 28. Locals, you know the drill: welcome the matrics, and plan your routes accordingly!

Weekend WeatherHere’s what to expect this weekend. Friday looks like the pick of the bunch, with plenty of sun and highs around 24°C—perfect for that ABBA show in Mossel Bay. It will get windy in the afternoon, especially around Plett. Saturday will be warm, with temps hitting 25°C or 26°C, but expect overcast skies rather than bright sun. Honestly, that’s perfect for walking around the Leisure Isle Festival without getting fried. Sunday stays warm (around 25°C) but will be cloudy, humid, and windy again. In short: it’s warm, but pack a layer for the wind and don’t be disappointed by the clouds.

From Winelands Bubbles to Halloween Beats

      Your Cape & Winelands Guide | 30 October 2025

Hello, Cape Town. There’s a particular energy in the air this week. It’s that perfect Cape moment where two seasons seem to overlap. On Friday, the city will be buzzing with the playful spookiness of Halloween, a final nod to the darker evenings. Then, as if on cue, the weekend arrives, bringing with it the first real, sun-drenched taste of summer. It’s a week of transition – from eerie beats to celebratory bubbles, from the last of the cool nights to the promise of long, lazy days ahead. This is the week the Cape truly comes alive. Let’s get into it.

      The Big 5 This Week

Here are the five essential experiences that define the week ahead. Don’t miss them.

The Celebration: Simonsig Cap Classique Affair

This Saturday marks the 5th anniversary of the Cap Classique Affair at Simonsig, and if there’s one event that signals the official start of the Cape’s festive season, this is it. Why is it a must-do? Because you’re not just going to a wine festival; you’re going to the very birthplace of Cap Classique in South Africa. It’s a pilgrimage for anyone who appreciates the finer things. Expect a vibrant, stylish celebration of bubbles on the beautiful estate lawns. This is your chance to be part of the moment the Winelands collectively decides summer has begun.

      • Where: Simonsig Family Vineyards, Kromme Rhee Road, Stellenbosch
      • When: Saturday, 1 November 2025
      • Cost: R595

The Spectacle: Halloween with Major League DJz

Forget your standard Halloween party. This Friday, the internationally acclaimed Major League DJz are taking over Cabo Beach Club for an exclusive two-hour set. Why is it a must-do? Because this is a world-class act at a premier venue, right on the water’s edge. It’s the kind of event that cements Cape Town’s status as a global party capital, perfectly blending an international tradition like Halloween with the uniquely South African sound of Amapiano that has taken the world by storm.

      • Where: Cabo Beach Club, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town
      • When: Friday, 31 October 2025, from 4:00 PM
      • Cost: From R250

      The Showcase: KAMERS/Makers Market

KAMERS/Makers is, without a doubt, South Africa’s most prestigious artisan market, and this year it’s setting up at a stunning new Winelands venue. Why is it a must-do? This is far more than just a market; it’s the heartbeat of the Cape’s creative economy. It’s your most direct line to the country’s best designers, artisans, and food producers, all in one place. Go to discover, to be inspired, and to buy beautiful, authentic things directly from the people who made them.

      • Where: Allée Bleue Estate, Groot Drakenstein, Franschhoek
      • When: Tuesday, 28 October to Sunday, 2 November 2025
      • Cost: Varies

The Anthem: Die Heuwels Fantasties at Meerendal

A daytime concert at a wine estate is a quintessential Cape experience, and this Saturday, one of the most iconic bands in the Afrikaans alternative scene, Die Heuwels Fantasties, takes the stage in Durbanville. Why is it a must-do? It’s the perfect fusion of music and wine culture. It also signals Durbanville’s arrival as a major entertainment hub, proving that the northern suburbs are a serious destination for big-ticket events.

      • Where: Meerendal Wine Estate, Vissershok Road, Durbanville
      • When: Saturday, 1 November 2025, from 9:00 AM
      • Cost: Varies

      The Trailblazer: FNB Wines2Whales

Even if you’re not on a mountain bike, you’ll feel the energy of this one. The FNB Wines2Whales is one of the world’s premier mountain bike stage races, and it kicks off this Friday, tracing a path from the heart of the Winelands to the whale-watching capital of Hermanus. Why is it a must-do (even as a spectator)? Because the event itself tells the story of the Cape. It’s a physical journey from vineyard to ocean, a narrative thread that connects the entire region. It fills the air with a sense of adventure and reminds us why this is one of the most beautiful, and challenging, landscapes on earth.

      • Where: Route from the Winelands to Hermanus
      • When: Friday, 31 October to Sunday, 9 November 2025
      • Cost: Free for spectators

      The Weekend Plan

No plans? No problem. Here’s a perfectly curated weekend that hits all the right notes.

Friday Evening: Decompress at the Boschendal Night Market

Shake off the week under the ancient oaks at Boschendal. Their Friday Night Market, which is back for the summer season, is the perfect antidote to a busy schedule. Grab a wood-fired pizza, some fresh oysters, and a glass of estate wine, find a spot on the lawn, and let the live music wash over you. It’s relaxed, beautiful, and quintessentially Winelands. Booking is essential.

Saturday Morning: Hike to a Hidden Waterfall

Time to earn that weekend indulgence. Head out towards Paarl and tackle the Krom River Waterfall trail in the Limietberg Nature Reserve. It’s a moderately challenging five-hour (return) hike that involves a few river crossings, but the reward is immense: a series of spectacular waterfalls and deep, cool mountain pools that are perfect for a refreshing swim. It’s an incredible way to immerse yourself in the raw, rugged beauty of the Boland mountains.

      Saturday Afternoon: Discover Local Creativity

After your hike, you’ll be perfectly positioned for a short drive to the KAMERS/Makers Market at Allée Bleue Estate in Franschhoek. It’s a wonderful contrast – from the wildness of the mountain trail to a vibrant celebration of local human creativity. Wander through the stalls, chat with the makers, and find a unique piece of South African design to take home.

Sunday Lunch: A Meal with a View

The Sunday drive for lunch is a Cape institution. Elevate it by booking a table at Alluvia Restaurant on the scenic Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. The bistro-style food is excellent, but the real star is the view. Their deck offers a breathtaking panorama of the Simonsberg mountains and the surrounding vineyards. It’s the perfect, scenic end to an unforgettable weekend. Bookings are highly recommended.

New in Town: Bloom at Erinvale

The Helderberg has a sophisticated new culinary destination. Bloom has just opened at the elegant Erinvale Hotel & Spa in Somerset West, taking over the space once occupied by the more formal, European-style restaurant, Stefan’s.This reinvention signals a deliberate shift towards a more contemporary and deeply South African fine-dining philosophy.

Executive Chef Sebastian Smith is at the helm, championing seasonality and sustainability through close partnerships with small-scale local farmers and artisans. The menu is a modern, refined take on local flavours, with dishes that are both playful and profound. Think roosterkoek elevated with mebos and bokkom, or a dish named ‘Rabbit in my Garden’ featuring rabbit roulade and consommé. The intimate, 30-seater space, designed by Cape Town’s Bone Studio, is built on a muted palette with bespoke art and floral accents drawn from the estate’s gardens. Bloom offers a four-course menu for R850 or a six-course menu for R1150 (wine pairings available). This opening firmly places Somerset West on the culinary map as a destination in its own right.

      • Where: Erinvale Hotel & Spa, 1 Erinvale Avenue, Somerset West

The Local Secret: Wine Tasting in a Cave

While Stellenbosch and Franschhoek often grab the limelight, the Durbanville Wine Valley remains one of the Cape’s best-kept secrets. And within this hidden gem of a route lies an experience that is truly unique: the wine tasting caves at Klein Roosboom Boutique Winery. This isn’t a gimmick; these cosy, individually themed tasting rooms were once the farm’s concrete wine fermentation tanks.

You can book a spot in “Versailles,” “Marrakech,” or the “Swinging Hollow” and sip on their award-winning wines while surrounded by the history of vintages past. Some caves still have the shiny tartaric acid deposits on the walls, a glittering reminder of their former life. It’s an intimate, personal, and utterly memorable way to experience wine, far from the bustling crowds of the more famous routes.

Insider Tip: The caves are incredibly popular and booking in advance is essential to secure your spot. Don’t just show up expecting a seat in one of these unique spaces.

Community Corner: Plan Your Winelands Travel

A quick but important heads-up for anyone planning a trip through the Winelands in a couple of weeks. The Franschhoek Pass will be closed to all traffic for several hours each day from Monday, 10 November to Friday, 14 November 2025.

The closure is necessary for essential asphalt paving work and will be in effect daily from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. During these times, no vehicles will be able to pass between the town of Franschhoek and the T-junction at the Theewaterskloof Dam. If you’re planning to travel that route, be sure to use an alternative and allow for extra travel time.

The deli and takeaway counter is a game-changer for those on the move, offering everything from excellent coffee and superfood smoothies to wholesome harvest-style lunches perfect for a beach picnic. The Local Secret: Knysna’s Drupkelders Trail

For those who believe the best views are earned, not given, let us introduce you to Drupkelders. Tucked away in the Goudveld section of the forest, this isn’t a casual stroll; it’s a short but challenging 3.6 km hike that rewards your effort tenfold. The trail descends into the Homtini River gorge, leading to a series of magnificent, deep rock pools surrounded by lush, verdant forest. It’s a pristine, almost prehistoric-feeling paradise perfect for a summer day of swimming and picnicking.

The reason it remains so pristine is by design. Access is strictly limited to just 12 people per day, and no children under 12 are permitted, which preserves the trail’s wild, untouched character. This careful management is a perfect example of the conservation ethos that protects the Garden Route’s most precious spots. You need to book a permit in advance, but making the effort means you get to experience one of the most magical and secluded places in the Knysna forest.

      • Location: Trail starts at the Forest Edge Nature-lovers Retreat gate entrance, Rheenendal.

Saturday brings a change, with cooler air and a good chance of showers across the region, so maybe save that indoor concert or restaurant visit for then. Sunday should see the rain clearing up, with temperatures hovering around a pleasant 19-20°C, making it ideal for a lazy Sunday market stroll or a relaxed lunch.

Your first option is an evening with a true South African legend, as jazz guitarist Jonathan Butler takes the stage at the Artscape for his ‘A Life in Song’ performance. Expect an intimate night of unparalleled guitar artistry, warm vocals, and storytelling that charts his journey from the Cape Flats to global acclaim. For something more fantastical, head to the Homecoming Centre for ‘a feast of flight presents: the little mermAID’. This isn’t the Disney version; it’s a magical retelling of the classic story through spellbinding pole and aerial artistry, where the tale unfolds in an aerial dreamscape between ocean and sky.

      • Jonathan Butler: Artscape Opera House, Foreshore. 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Tickets from R320.
      • The Little Mermaid: Star Theatre, Homecoming Centre, District Six. 7:00 pm.

After you’ve had your fill of the aerial artistry, make your way across to the coast for the afternoon. Grab a spot on the sand at Camps Bay to catch the semi-final action of the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour from around 2:00 pm. As the sun sets, escape the crowds for an exclusive culinary experience at Meuse Farm in Hout Bay. New in Town: Farro’s Welcome Return

The restaurant has shed its former skin and re-emerged with a beautifully refined concept: an intimate, simply delicious neighborhood bistro. The focus is on unpretentious, high-quality fare with a “spritz of cocktail culture.” Best of all, they’re bringing back the beloved “Farro Date Night experience,” cementing its status as the perfect spot for a special, low-key evening in Gardens. It’s a story of evolution, and the result is a charming, confident addition to the City Bowl’s dining scene.

The Local Secret: Discovering Tranquility Cracks

For those looking to get onto the mountain but away from the crowds, there’s a hidden world waiting to be discovered. The Tranquility Cracks are a series of fissures and corridors on the Twelve Apostles side of Table Mountain, forming a secret labyrinth of mossy caves and ancient yellowwood trees. Stepping inside feels like entering another realm—cool, quiet, and utterly serene. It’s a moderately challenging hike, but the reward is a truly unique experience of the mountain’s hidden geology.

The key is knowing how to get there. The best route is a beautiful 12 km loop. Start at the parking area at the top of Theresa Avenue in Camps Bay and head up the jeep track to join the well-known Pipe Track. Follow the Pipe Track towards Hout Bay, enjoying the incredible coastal views. You’ll eventually ascend via Corridor Ravine—a steady, steep climb. At the top, turn left onto the Apostles path. After about 10 minutes, look carefully for a small, almost hidden path on your left; this is your entrance to the cracks. Take your time exploring the maze. To descend, return to the Apostles path and continue left towards Kasteelspoort, which offers a stunning (and steep) route back down to the Pipe Track, passing the famous “diving board” rock formation along the way. The full circuit takes about 4.5 to 5 hours, so pack water, snacks, and a warm layer.

      ⚠️ Safety Warning: Tranquility Cracks

This is a strenuous hike with a high risk of getting lost.

      • Don’t Go Alone: The path is hidden and the cracks are a maze. Go with someone who knows the route.
      • Inform Someone: Share your exact route and expected finish time with a reliable person.
      • Be Prepared: Take ample water (2L+), snacks, a warm layer, and a rain jacket. Mountain weather changes suddenly.
      • Know Your Limits: This route is long and involves very steep sections. You must be fit and wear proper hiking shoes.
      • Start Early: This is a 5+ hour hike. Do not risk being on the mountain after dark.
      • Emergency Contact: Save WSAR: 021 937 0300.

Establishment Spotlight: The Watershed – A Cathedral of Creativity

Forget generic souvenirs and mass-produced curios. If you want to find the true creative soul of Cape Town, your destination is The Watershed at the V&A Waterfront. Housed in a vast, light-filled repurposed warehouse, this space is less a market and more a living gallery—a cathedral of local creativity. It’s the V&A’s brilliant answer to the question of what authentic South African design looks like.

The Watershed is home to over 150 stalls, representing more than 365 local brands, from fashion and jewelry to art and home decor. This wasn’t always the case; the space was once home to vendors selling the kind of trinkets you could find anywhere. Its transformation in 2014 marked a deliberate, conscious shift to championing genuine local talent. The application process for vendors is famously strict, ensuring that everything on display is of the highest quality and originality. It’s an incubator for small businesses and a direct line to the city’s best makers. For locals and visitors alike, it is the single best place to invest in beautiful, meaningful pieces that tell a uniquely South African story.

      • Location: The Watershed, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
      • Opening Hours: Daily, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Community Corner: Know Before You Go

A couple of friendly heads-ups to help you navigate the city this week.

Driver’s Alert: The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate is starting with some major road resurfacing projects this week. While the initial work is focused outside the city centre in areas like Kleinvlei, Eerste River, and Kuils River, be aware that this may affect traffic on key commuter routes into and out of town. Plan for potential delays if you’re travelling through these areas.

A Note on Savvy Exploring: As we head into the busier summer season, it’s always smart to explore with awareness. Crime is a reality in any major city, and a few local habits go a long way. Keep your valuables out of sight, and tuck any shopping into the boot before you leave a parking area to avoid “smash-and-grab” incidents. When using ATMs, try to stick to machines inside a bank or a busy shop. It’s not about being fearful; it’s about being savvy so you can relax and enjoy everything this amazing city has to offer with confidence.

The Big 3 This Week: Don’t Miss Out

With so much happening, we’ve curated the three essential experiences that define the upcoming weekend. Whether you’re a music lover, a nature enthusiast, or a culture seeker, there’s a world-class event waiting for you.

      1. For the Music Lovers: Country In The Karoo Music Festival

This is more than just a concert; it’s a full-blown Karoo immersion. Jakhals Events and Bhejane Game Reserve have teamed up to create an unforgettable weekend at the Bhejane Game Lodge just outside Willowmore. The festival kicks off on Friday night with an intimate food and wine pairing, setting the stage for the main event on Saturday: a live concert featuring Afrikaans country superstar Appel as the headline act. The weekend wraps up with a relaxed taco breakfast on Sunday morning. It’s a rare opportunity to experience top-tier live music against the vast, breathtaking backdrop of the Klein Karoo—a perfect weekend escape.

      2. For the Nature Enthusiasts: Plett Bitou Birding Festival

From Friday, 24 October, until the end of the month, Plettenberg Bay transforms into a paradise for bird lovers with the return of the Plett Bitou Birding Festival. This week-long celebration of the region’s incredible avian biodiversity is designed for everyone from seasoned twitchers to curious beginners. The program is packed with diverse experiences, including early morning guided walks through fynbos and forest, peaceful canoe outings on the Keurbooms River, and fascinating bird-ringing demonstrations led by local experts. More than just a species checklist, the festival is rooted in conservation and community, focusing on the joy of “mindful observation, connection, and well-being”.

      3. For the Culture Seekers: ForestJazz Weekend

Prepare for an enchanting weekend of soulful rhythms in Knysna. The ForestJazz festival offers a sophisticated and atmospheric experience, hosted at the unique 34 Waenhout venue, a converted old wood factory. The event begins on Friday evening with an exclusive VIP JAZZ CLUB night in an intimate indoor setting. On Saturday, the festival opens up from 2:00 PM into the night, featuring six to seven different jazz acts performing under beautiful stretch tents. Complemented by artisanal build-your-own burgers, wood-fired pizzas, and a full bar, this event is a true celebration of the creative, soulful side of the Garden Route.

The Local Secret: A Taste of Thyme & Again

While new spots are always exciting, some of the Garden Route’s greatest treasures are the institutions that have perfected their craft over the years. Just outside Plettenberg Bay on the N2, you’ll find a prime example: Thyme & Again Farmstall. It’s a place that’s all too easy to drive straight past if you don’t know it’s there, but for those in the know, it’s an essential stop.

Step inside, and you’re greeted by the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pies, artisanal breads, and brewing coffee. The shelves are a treasure trove of local goodness, laden with everything from homemade preserves and regional cheeses to delectable baked goods and unique gifts. It’s the perfect place to stock up on supplies for a picnic at Robberg Nature Reserve or to find a special something to take back home. Thyme & Again is more than just a farm stall; it’s a celebration of the Garden Route’s rich agricultural heritage and warm hospitality, a true hidden gem that captures the flavour of our region.

Community Corner: What’s the Word on the Route?

Stay connected with the news and developments shaping our community. Here are two key updates from across the region this week.

Full Steam Ahead! The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe is Coming Back!

In what is undoubtedly some of the most exciting news for the region in years, it has been officially confirmed that the iconic Outeniqua Choo Tjoe steam train is on track for a grand return. After nearly two decades of silence, Classic Rail has announced that contracts have been signed and plans are firmly in place to rebuild the historic line. The project will be rolled out in two phases, with the first priority being the restoration of the track between Knysna and Sedgefield, a process expected to take about 12 months. Work has already begun, with teams clearing vegetation to allow for detailed inspections of bridges and tracks. This monumental undertaking is set to be a major boost for the Garden Route, promising a wave of renewed tourism and creating much-needed jobs and opportunities for local businesses.

A Note on Our Dams: Every Drop Counts

As we enjoy the beauty of spring, it’s important to remain mindful of our most vital resource: water. Recent municipal reports indicate that the Garden Route is currently experiencing a moderate level of drought, with below-average rainfall recorded this year. In George, Level 2B water restrictions remain in place, with the Garden Route Dam level reported at 61.88% as of 14 October. Elsewhere, the Garden Route District Municipality has been actively assisting communities in Knysna (Hornlee, Concordia) and Bitou (Kurland, Buffalo Bay) by tankering in water to supplement low reservoir levels, a situation exacerbated by recent power outages. This is a gentle reminder for all of us—residents and visitors alike—to use water wisely. Our collective conservation efforts are crucial to ensuring a sustainable supply for everyone.

The Main Event: Adrenaline on the Mountain

For the first time in nearly 60 years, the iconic Philip Kgosana Drive is being transformed into a world-class racetrack for the inaugural Speed Classic Cape Town. This isn’t just another race; it’s an ambitious revival of hillclimb racing in the Mother City, a two-day festival of speed, style, and engineering set against one of the most beautiful backdrops on earth. The event’s vision is to create an international, iconic hillclimb on the slopes of Table Mountain, and to do so, organizers are bringing in top-tier infrastructure, including concrete barriers and catch fencing similar to that used for Formula E, to build the 1.8km track.

The weekend is split into two distinct celebrations of automotive power:

      • Saturday, 25 October: The festivities kick off with the Classic Car race, where rare vintage masterpieces will roar up the hill, a beautiful tribute to the golden age of motorsport.
      • Sunday, 26 October: The pace quickens for the King of the Mountain showdown, as modern supercars and high-octane machines battle the clock in a thrilling display of contemporary speed and power.

      • Insider Tip: Book the 9:30 am safari departure to give yourself the best chance of securing a 10 am tasting in one of Klein Roosboom’s famous and highly sought-after wine caves. You must book the cave tasting separately and in advance!.
      • Cost & Booking: The safari costs R330 per person for transport.

A Fairytale Treat: The Scone Shack

On Saturday, 25 October, expect partly cloudy skies with showers possible. The high will be around 16°C, dropping to a low of 11°C, and there’s a medium (40%) chance of rain.

The weekend closes out on Sunday, 26 October, with partly cloudy conditions, a high of 16°C, a low of 12°C, and a low (10%) chance of rain.

What an incredible line-up! From the roar of engines to the quiet contemplation of art, there truly is something for everyone this weekend.

The Big 5 This Week: Your Unmissable Cape Itinerary

These are the five things you absolutely have to have on your radar. Trust us.

      1. The Grand Finale of Woordfees, Stellenbosch

Don’t let the name fool you; the Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees is so much more than a literary festival, and its final weekend (until 19 October) is the perfect time to dive in. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the entire town has become a beehive of creative energy. While its roots are Afrikaans, the festival has curated an incredible experience for everyone. The visual arts, music, and many theatre shows transcend language, making it a must-visit.

      • Why it’s a must-do: It’s a chance to experience the historic town of Stellenbosch at its most vibrant. The atmosphere is electric, with pop-up events, street art, and music around every corner.
      • For the English-speaking visitor: Head straight for the incredible, free-to-visit visual art exhibitions like Strauss & Co’s “Seeing Ourselves: South African Portraits Past and Present” at the Oude Leeskamer. Catch a moving English-language play like My Name is Lucy Barton or Andrew Buckland’s classic, The Ugly Noo Noo. And don’t miss universally beloved musical acts like the Soweto String Quartet or jazz maestro Mandisi Dyantyis.
      • Details: The festival runs until Sunday, 19 October 2025, at various venues across Stellenbosch. Download the festival guide from their website and make use of the handy Toyota Shuttle Service to get around. More info at woordfees.co.za.

      2. Cheer on the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, Cape Town

This isn’t just a race; it’s a city-wide celebration of human spirit, and on Sunday, 19 October, the streets of Cape Town will belong to the runners. As a candidate for the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, the event is a massive affair, and the “gees” (spirit) is contagious. Instead of hiding from the road closures, we say embrace them!

      • Why it’s a must-do: It’s a rare opportunity to see the city from a different perspective, with streets usually full of cars transformed into a vibrant corridor of support and celebration.
      • Be the best spectator: Find a spot along the Sea Point promenade to feel the start and finish line energy. For a real party, head to the City’s official vibe point outside City Hall on the Grand Parade, where there’ll be a DJ, dancers, and even a minstrel group. Or, grab a coffee in Rondebosch or Woodstock and cheer on the runners as they tackle the middle stretch.

      3. An Intimate Art Escape to Solo Studios, Riebeek Kasteel

If the marathon crowds sound like a bit too much, why not take a scenic drive out to the Swartland? From 24 to 26 October, the gorgeous town of Riebeek Kasteel hosts Solo Studios, a beautifully intimate art experience. This isn’t your typical gallery crawl; it’s a rare chance to step inside the private spaces where creativity happens.

      • Why it’s a must-do: It offers a personal connection to art that you seldom get. You can chat with painters, sculptors, and printmakers in their own studios, see their processes up close, and discover the stories behind their work.
      • The experience: Over one weekend, dozens of artists open their doors. The event is a perfect blend of art, food, and wine, showcasing the very best of this charming, creative region. It’s the perfect, sophisticated antidote to a busy week in the city.
      • Details: Friday, 24 October to Sunday, 26 October 2025, throughout Riebeek Kasteel.

      4. Unleash Your Inner Dancing Queen, Hermanus

Get ready for an evening of pure, unadulterated joy on the coast. Benguela Cove Wine Estate is transforming into a Greek island paradise for one night only to host Dancing Queen: The Ultimate ABBA Experience. It’s the perfect excuse to dress up, sing along at the top of your lungs, and indulge in some glorious nostalgia.

      • Why it’s a must-do: This is more than a tribute show; it’s a full-blown themed party at one of the most stunning venues on the Whale Coast. Think sunset views, fantastic food, and all the ABBA hits you can handle.
      • The options: You can book a “Show Only” ticket which includes a welcome drink and access to the disco after-party, or go for the “Complete Experience” which includes a fabulous four-course Mediterranean dinner.
      • Details: Saturday, 18 October 2025, from 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM at Benguela Cove Wine Estate, R43, Hermanus. Tickets start from R450. Book by calling 087 357 0637 or emailing info@benguelacove.co.za.

      5. A Perfect Day for the Whole Family, Paarl

Looking for the ideal, relaxed family day out? The Perdeberg Family Festival in Paarl is your answer. On Saturday, 25 October, this wonderful winery is throwing a party with something for literally everyone, from toddlers to grandparents. It’s all about good wine, good food, and good times on the lawn.

      • Why it’s a must-do: It perfectly balances adult fun with kid-friendly entertainment. While you enjoy a wine tasting or even try your hand at a wine blending experience, the little ones will be busy with jumping castles, face painting, and games.
      • What’s on offer: Expect live music, lawn games, lucky draws, and even a demonstration of the dramatic art of Sabrage (opening a bubbly bottle with a sword!). You can pre-order a picnic box to make the day completely hassle-free.
      • Details: Saturday, 25 October 2025, from 10:00 AM at Perdeberg Cellar, Vryguns Farm, Windmeul, Paarl. Tickets are R195 for adults, R80 for under-18s, and free for kids under 2. There’s even a R100 “Designated Driver” ticket, which we love to see! Bookings are via Dineplan.

Community Corner: Navigating The Cape This Week

A couple of important heads-ups to help you plan your movements.

Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Road & Parking Restrictions

This is a big one. To achieve its goal of becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major, the marathon route must be completely clear of vehicles. This means extensive road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect from 8:00 AM on Friday, 17 October until 2:00 PM on Sunday, 19 October.

      • Key Affected Areas: Expect major disruptions across the Atlantic Seaboard (Beach Road, Green Point Main Road), the CBD (Adderley, Darling, Buitengracht), the Southern Suburbs (Campground Road, Rondebosch), and areas like Woodstock and Salt River (Albert and Victoria Roads).
      • Our Strongest Advice: Do not attempt to park anywhere near the route. Vehicles will be towed. The official Park & Ride and shuttle services are the only sensible way to get to the race precinct. For a full, detailed list of every single road closure, please visit the official marathon website.

      Minibus Taxi Route Closures Update

Please be aware that the Western Cape government has suspended operations on several minibus taxi routes for the past month to curb transport-related violence. The Minister of Mobility is currently seeking to extend these closures.

      • Affected Areas: The closures primarily impact routes connecting Mfuleni, Somerset West, Khayelitsha, Nomzamo, and Lwandle.
      • Alternatives: Commuters in these areas should note that Golden Arrow Bus Services and Metrorail are providing alternative transport options. This is an ongoing situation, so please plan your travel accordingly if you rely on transport in these specific corridors.

Adventure Idea: Conquer the Aasvoelkop Trail

For the seasoned hikers looking for a rewarding challenge, it’s time to tackle the Aasvoelkop Via Adder Ladder Trailin Hermanus. This is not a gentle stroll; it’s a tough but spectacular 10 km hike in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve that will take you about five hours to complete. The route zigzags steeply up the mountain via the aptly named “Adder Ladder,” takes you through a beautiful patch of indigenous forest, and rewards you with absolutely breathtaking panoramic views from Galpin Hut. From here, you can see all of Hermanus and across the expanse of Walker Bay.

      • Starting Point: Fernkloof Nature Reserve Visitor Centre, Hermanus.
      • Pro Tip: This is a serious hike. Wear proper hiking boots, pack plenty of water and snacks, and always check the weather before you go. The sense of accomplishment at the top is worth every step.

Your Perfect Garden Route Weekend Plan (17-19 October)

Not sure how to piece it all together? Here’s a little inspiration for a weekend that samples the best of the region, from Plett to Wilderness.

      Friday Evening: Kick-off in Style

Start the weekend in Plettenberg Bay with a classic local ritual: sundowners at Barrington’s Craft Brewery. Their Tap Time & Happy Hour runs from 16:00 to 19:00, where you can grab a pint of their excellent craft beer, a glass of house wine, or a G&T for only R35.9 It’s the perfect, relaxed entry into the weekend.

For a more cultural evening, head to George for the Carpe Musicam! Concert Orchestra and Choir’s “The Rest of the Best!” performance at Laerskool George-Suid at 19:00 (Tickets R150 for adults). It’s a wonderful showcase of local talent. Of course, if you’re at the Ard Matthews concert at Fancourt, you’re already set for a memorable night.

Saturday: Community Spirit & Local Flavours

The day begins in Sedgefield with the uplifting Pink Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness (starts 08:30 from the Engen/Wimpy). After your walk and a well-deserved free coffee, you’re perfectly positioned for the next stop: the legendary Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market. Grab a delicious breakfast bun or a shawarma and soak up the incredible atmosphere. It’s the bustling, vibrant heart of the Garden Route on a Saturday morning.

As the afternoon unfolds, take a slow, scenic drive towards Wilderness. Don’t miss the turn-off for the Map of Africa viewpoint in Wilderness Heights. It’s a breathtaking, free stop that offers a panoramic perspective of the Kaaimans River winding through the forested hills below. For dinner, make your way to Knysna. For unforgettable views of the Heads, you can’t beat East Head Café. For a more rustic, toes-in-the-sand vibe with the freshest seafood, check out Freshline Fisheries.

      Sunday: Rivers, Roasts & Rhythms

Ease into Sunday morning with a peaceful paddle. Rent a canoe and explore the tranquil, bird-filled waterways of the Touw River in the Wilderness National Park.11 It’s an accessible adventure for everyone and a beautiful way to experience the serenity of the area.

For lunch, the Milkwood Village Sunday Funday Market in Wilderness (10:00 – 15:00) is a fantastic choice, with live music, craft stalls, and a variety of food options in a relaxed garden setting. If you’re looking for a spot where the kids are sorted, Bossa restaurants often have a “Kids Eat Free” special on Sundays until 16:00, making for a stress-free family meal.

End your weekend on a perfect note at the Sunday Sessions at the Wilderness Beach House. Kicking off at 15:00, it’s a super-chilled afternoon and evening of live music, pizza, and good company, with free entry. It’s a true local’s favourite and the best way to soak up the last of the weekend vibes.

The Local Secret: Conquer the Salt River Mouth Trail

For those willing to venture slightly off the beaten path, Nature’s Valley hides one of the region’s most rewarding short hikes. The Salt River Mouth trail is a spectacular loop that delivers dense forest, sweeping coastal views, and a secluded beach that feels like your own private discovery.

The trail starts near the restaurant on the western edge of Nature’s Valley village and immediately begins a steady climb through the cool, indigenous Tsitsikamma forest. The ascent is worth it, as you emerge onto a fynbos-covered saddle with magnificent views back over Nature’s Valley and the coastline. From there, the path descends sharply towards the Salt River estuary, where you’re greeted by a pristine, hidden beach nestled between forest-clad cliffs.

      The Insider Info You Need:

      • Route: It’s a circular trail of roughly 4-5 km, which takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete. It’s moderately easy, but be prepared for some steep sections and a bit of scrambling over rocks along the coastal part of the return journey.
      • Permit: You may need to get a permit from the De Vasselot campsite office before you start, so it’s best to check in there first.
      • The Golden Rule: This is absolutely crucial—the coastal section of the trail is highly tide-dependent. Only attempt this part of the hike at low tide. The rocks can be slippery, dangerous, and completely impassable during high tide. Check the tide tables before you go to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Community Corner: What You Need to Know This Week

A few important updates from around the region that are relevant for both residents and visitors.

Water Watch: A Tale of Two Towns

You may have heard talk about water issues, and it’s important to have the right context. In Knysna, some areas like Hornlee, Concordia, and Buffalo Bay have recently experienced low water pressure. This is not due to a shortage in the dams, but rather the result of extended power outages over the weekend that affected the pumps filling the reservoirs. The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) is assisting with water tankers while the system stabilises.

Meanwhile, in George, the situation is different. The Garden Route Dam is currently at 61.88% (as of 14 October), which means the city remains on Level 2B water restrictions. For residents, this means no sprinklers, and watering with a handheld hose is only allowed on designated days and times (even-numbered houses on Mondays/Thursdays, odd-numbered on Tuesdays/Fridays, between 18:00 and 20:00). For everyone, it’s a good reminder that water is a precious resource here, and every drop counts.

      A Note on Fire Safety

As we head into the warmer, drier months, fire safety is top of mind. The GRDM has released a draft of its new Fire Safety By-Law for public comment. If you’re a resident who wants to have a say in how our veld and mountains are protected, the document is available for review at municipal offices until 13 November 2025.

Mark Your Calendars: What’s Next on the Garden Route

      Weekend Weather Forecast (17-19 October)

Here’s a quick look at what to expect this weekend to help you plan your outfits and activities.

      • Friday, 17 Oct: A beautiful, warm day across the route. Expect overcast skies but pleasant temperatures, with highs reaching up to 24°C. Perfect for an evening concert or happy hour.
      • Saturday, 18 Oct: A cooler day is on the cards, with a chance of rain. It’s a good idea to pack a rain jacket for the Pink Walk and then plan for a cosy afternoon exploring the indoor stalls at the Wild Oats Market. Highs will be around 19°C.
      • Sunday, 19 Oct: The clouds should part a bit, bringing partly to mostly cloudy skies but likely staying dry. A lovely day for a scenic drive or the afternoon music session in Wilderness, with highs in the high teens, around 19°C.

In short, it’s a classic spring mix! Pack a little something for every occasion.

Whatever you get up to, have a fantastic week exploring this beautiful coast of ours.

      All the best,

      The Team at Local Digest

The Big 3 This Week: Your Unmissable Guide

This week is massive, but if you can only do three things, make them these. Each one offers a completely different taste of what makes the Garden Route so unique.

      1. The Festival Escape: Earthdance Gardenroute

Why it’s a must-do: This is more than just a music festival; it’s a full-blown, three-day escape into the heart of the Karoo. Earthdance is a global movement, and our local edition is a beautiful gathering of good people, good intentions, and seriously groovy basslines. It’s your chance to disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with music, nature, and community, all while dancing under a blanket of stars. The entire event is also a force for good, with this year’s proceeds going to support the Rosemore Home for the Aged. Come for the music, stay for the vibe, and leave with a full heart.

      The Details:

      • Event: EARTHDANCE GARDENROUTE 2025
      • Location: Karoo 62 Escape, R62, Ladismith

      • Price: Tickets start from R200. Price includes free camping for the entire weekend.

      2. The Epic Challenge: Lions Karoo to Coast MTB Race

Why it’s a must-do: For the riders, this is the bucket-list 100 km mountain bike race—a legendary test of grit and endurance that traverses one of the most breathtaking routes in the country, from the arid beauty of Uniondale, over the Outeniqua Mountains, and down into the lush forests of Knysna. For the rest of us, it’s a spectator’s dream. The energy in Uniondale over the weekend is electric. Arrive early on Friday for the Wine and Wheels Expo, soak up the pre-race buzz, and then cheer on the thousands of cyclists as they embark on their epic journey on Sunday morning. It’s a true celebration of human spirit and our incredible landscape.

      3. The Festive Gathering: Oktoberfest at Fancourt

Why it’s a must-do: Dust off your dirndls and lederhosen, because Fancourt is hosting an Oktoberfest with a distinctly sophisticated South African flair. This isn’t just about beer (though there will be plenty of incredible local craft brews to sample); it’s a full-day celebration of food, music, and good old-fashioned fun on one of the most beautiful estates in the country. Expect long festive tables, live music and a DJ all day, delicious German-inspired cuisine (think eisbein, schnitzel, and wursts), and a fantastic, high-energy atmosphere. The Weekend Plan: A Knysna Music Marathon

If you find yourself in or around Knysna this weekend, you’re in for a treat. The town is turning into a veritable live music hub. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Friday Night: Country Classics & Lagoon Views

Kick off the weekend with a dose of pure country magic. The Tribute to Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers is set to be a night of timeless hits that will have you singing along from start to finish. Held at the ever-popular Blend, it’s the perfect relaxed setting to ease into the weekend. Young and sassy Ane’ channels Dolly’s iconic spirit, while award-winning Gareth James embodies the legendary Gambler himself.

      • Event: A Tribute to Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers
      • Location: Blend Country Restaurant & Pub, George Rex Drive, Knysna
      • Date & Time: Friday, 19 September. Gates open at 5:30 PM, show starts at 7:00 PM.
      • Price: R160 for adults, R100 for kids & teens (5-17).

Saturday Day: New Discoveries & Local Flavours

Before the evening’s music, it’s time to explore what’s new in town. The highly anticipated Milkwood Squarehas finally opened its doors on Main Street, and it’s a fantastic addition to Knysna’s retail heart. This R150 million development has been designed with a “village feel,” thoughtfully built around a magnificent old Milkwood tree that has been preserved as a natural centrepiece.

It’s not a massive, impersonal mall, but a convenient, community-focused strip of high-quality stores. You’ll find a top-spec Checkers FreshX and Checkers Liquor, a ClicksCheckers OutdoorWhitehouseThe Crazy Store, and a few great fast-food options and a high-end coffee shop. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit and private investment in Knysna, creating a vibrant new hub for locals and visitors. Spend your Saturday afternoon here grabbing lunch, stocking up on supplies, and enjoying the buzz.

      Saturday Night: Choose Your Anthem

Saturday night in Knysna presents a delicious dilemma with two incredible tribute shows happening simultaneously. Which will you choose?

      Option 1: The Grunge Revival

If you’re ready to relive the raw energy of the 90s, head back to Blend for A Tribute to Nirvana. Performed by the incredible Cantrel, this is your chance to grunge-out to all your favourite hits. Expect a high-energy, no-frills night of pure rock nostalgia.

      • Event: A Tribute to Nirvana
      • Location: Blend Country Restaurant & Pub, Knysna
      • Date & Time: Saturday, 20 September (Check with venue for exact time).

Option 2: The Classic Rock Soiree

For a more polished, but no less powerful, musical experience, make your way up to the elegant Simola Hotel for Rumours of Fleetwood Mac. After years of sold-out shows across the Cape, this acclaimed tribute is finally coming to the Garden Route. The show is centred around the iconic Rumours album and is performed by some of Cape Town’s top musicians.

      • Event: Rumours of Fleetwood Mac
      • Location: Simola Hotel Country Club & Spa, Knysna
      • Date & Time: Saturday, 20 September, from 6:00 PM.
      • Price: R390 (Ticket is for the show; a full à la carte dinner menu is available).
      • Booking: Heads up—this show is officially SOLD OUT! Your best bet is to call the hotel directly at 044 302 9600 to see if they have a waiting list for any last-minute cancellations.

Sunday Recovery: Forest Trails & Lakeside Coffee

After a packed weekend, a gentle Sunday recovery is in order. My recommendation? Head into the Knysna Forest for a peaceful walk. The Jubilee Creek picnic site offers a beautiful, easy trail along the river. Or, for something a bit more immersive, try one of the three circular Elephant Trails that start from the Diepwalle Forest Station. Afterwards, treat yourself to a well-deserved coffee and pastry at one of the fantastic waterside cafés on Thesen Island.

The Local Secret: A Taste of Tranquility

Every now and then, you stumble upon a place that feels like it was put there just for you. This week’s secret is exactly that: the Blue Rocks Cafe and Grill in Nature’s Valley. Tucked away in one of the Garden Route’s most pristine and peaceful corners, this sensational beach-side spot is the ultimate reward after a swim in the lagoon or a hike on the nearby Salt River trail.

It’s open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a menu focused on fresh, seasonal fare with a Mediterranean seafood twist. Locals whisper in hushed tones about their prawn curry, and for good reason—it’s to-die-for. This is the real deal, a true hidden gem where you can sit back with sandy feet, listen to the ocean, and enjoy a meal that tastes like the Garden Route itself.

Adventure Idea: Paddle to a Hidden Waterfall

If you’re craving a bit of adventure that’s both active and utterly serene, you have to try the canoe trip up the Touw River in Wilderness. It’s a classic Garden Route experience that never gets old.

      Here’s how to do it:

      1. Get Your Gear: Head to Eden Adventures, conveniently located at the Fairy Knowe Hotel right on the river. You can hire single or double canoes for a few hours or the whole day.
      2. The Paddle: The journey to the waterfall is a gentle 40-minute (about 3 km) paddle up the tranquil, reed-lined river. The water is dark and calm, and the only sounds are your paddle and the birds in the surrounding forest.
      3. The Hike: You’ll moor your canoe at a small landing and continue on foot. A beautiful 2.5 km boardwalk guides you through the indigenous forest for another 40 minutes.
      4. The Reward: The trail ends at a beautiful waterfall cascading into a series of large rock pools. It’s the perfect spot for a refreshing (and chilly!) swim and a well-deserved picnic.

Pro-Tip: Pack some snacks, plenty of water, and your binoculars. The forest is rich with birdlife, and you might just be lucky enough to spot the elusive and vibrant Knysna Loerie.

Community Corner: News You Can Use

A few important updates and opportunities for our community this week.

A Call to the Coast: International Coastal Cleanup Day

This Saturday, 20 September, is International Coastal Cleanup Day, the world’s largest single-day volunteer effort for our oceans. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to give back to the beautiful coastline we all love so much. All across the Garden Route, community groups will be gathering to clean our beaches, rivers, and estuaries, collecting crucial data on pollution as they go. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you are welcome to join. To find a registered cleanup near you or to organize your own, visit the Sustainable Seas Trust website at sst.org.za. Let’s work together to keep our paradise pristine.

      An Important Update from Knysna

You may have seen in the news that the Western Cape Government has made the decision to dissolve the Knysna Municipal Council and appoint an administrator. This step was taken in response to ongoing challenges with governance and basic service delivery, particularly concerning the town’s water and sewage infrastructure. While this is significant news for residents, it’s also a moment to recognize the incredible resilience of the Knysna community. The town’s heart beats strong through its local businesses, artists, and community organizations. Knysna remains as beautiful and welcoming as ever, so please continue to visit, shop, dine, and support the people who make it such a special place.

Water Watch: Garden Route Dam Levels

Just a quick update for all residents: as of 9 September, the Garden Route Dam was at 71.90% capacity. A friendly reminder that Level 2B water restrictions are still in effect across the George municipal area. Let’s continue to be mindful of our water usage.
